Gua Sha is a technique consisting of applying oil to the skin and then scraping the skin with a smooth edged tool. This technique is used to treat acute or chronic pain, prevention of the common cold, flu, asthma, bronchitis and chronic inflammation. The process of scraping the skin may produce discoloration which can appear light pink, dark purple or dark red. This discoloration is called “sha” in Traditional Chinese Medicine and often fades within a few days after treatment. “Sha” is a desired effect as it exhibits the efficacy of the treatment.
