Cupping employs the use of a suction between a glass cup and the patient’s skin to gently pull the superficial tissues. The application of an open flame to the inside of the cup creates a vacuum, which causes a gentle pull. (Don’t worry, the open flame will not burn you!) The suction enhances circulation and lymphatic drainage which assist the tissues in processing metabolic waste and then regenerating. Similar to Gua Sha, the treatment often results in red marks known as “sha,” which will dissipate over the days following. Cupping is used for bronchitis, cough, cold, and tight muscles.
